Jim Arrington and “Chuck” Schelin began a professional and personal relationship in 1976 while practicing law in Southwest Virginia. They were partners from 1977 until Chuck’s death in June 1989. At the time of Chuck’s death and with the permission of his widow, Jim continued the practice of law with Schelin as part of the firm name.

Charles E. "Chuck" Schelin (1940 - 1989) was one of Jim Arrington’s original partners. Chuck began his legal career working with the firm of Griffith and Bondurant in Lebanon, Virginia. He was born and raised in Richmond, Virginia. He died in a private airplane crash in Richmond on June 9, 1989. He was the pilot and only passenger.

Jim is operating as a solo practitioner since October 2016. He has practiced law since 1976. Prior to his law career, he served in the U.S. Army from 1969 until 1971. From 1976 until 1982, he served as a substitute judge for the General District and Juvenile and Domestic Relations Courts in seven southwest Virginia counties. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Business Management from East Tennessee State University and his law degree from T.C. Williams School of Law in Richmond, VA. He is licensed to practice law in Virginia. Jim’s legal practice includes all areas of personal injury and Virginia Workers’ Compensation.

Brenda (known to staff and friends as “B.K.”) has worked in the legal field most of her career and as a legal administrator for more than 28 years. She received her Bachelor of Science in Business Administration Degree and Medical Secretarial Science Certificate from The University of Virginia at Wise. Brenda is responsible for the day to day management of the firm. She is a member of the National Association of Legal Administrators, the Western Virginia Chapter of ALA, the American Management Association, and completed the Bristol Leadership tomorrow program. She is a Notary Public in Virginia and Tennessee.

Arrington Schelin is pleased to announce their newest associate attorney, Chad Gilbert, who joined the firm on June 5, 2017. Chad is licensed to practice law in Tennessee, and plans to take the Virginia State Bar Examination in February 2018. He is a member of the Tennessee Bar Association, and a member of Virginia Trial Lawyers Association.

He is a native of Marion/Smyth County, VA.

Mary Jean has been employed with the law firm and its predecessor firms since March 1975. She received a Legal Assistant Certificate from Southwest Virginia Community College in Richlands, Virginia in 1997. She completed legal classes at Virginia Highlands Community College in Abingdon, Virginia.Mary Jean has worked in all departments including domestic relations, administrative law, corporations, and personal injury. She worked in our real estate department for twelve years. She currently serves as the accounting manager and as staff assistant to our managing partner and administrator.

She enjoys church, walking, family and friends, and works with children aged 4–7 at the Lebanon Church of Christ. She helps clients at the firm by being understanding to the present circumstances they are in. Many clients would rather be working and not be injured, dealing with insurance companies and not being able to do things they could before their injury or sickness. Mary loves the firm because it represents the people. The firm is very giving to the community and the local schools.

She has more than 25 years of past work experience in the medical field. Sue organizes and summarizes medical records for our social security disability cases and inputs the data in our case management computer program. She is familiar with our office systems, procedures and office equipment. She is a Notary Public in Virginia.

Carrie joined our firm in July 1998 as the receptionist for our Bristol office. She was moved to a paralegal position in the firm’s Tennessee Workers’ Comp department in June 2001. She also worked as a case manager in our personal injury department and is presently a paralegal in our social security disability department.

Carrie graduated from Lebanon High School in Lebanon, Virginia in 1996 and attended both The University of Virginia’s College at Wise in Wise, Virginia and Southwest Virginia Community College in Richlands, Virginia, where she received her Associate’s Degree.

She is responsible for the overview of a volume caseload, pre-screening potential new clients, setting up new files, processing calls and mail from clients, requesting and reviewing medical evidence, setting up medical evaluations for clients, and assisting the attorney with the development of cases. How she helps clients’ experience at the firm is being patient and compassionate with each client. She wants all clients to feel like they made the right choice by allowing the firm to help them.
